Mission Statement

Physicians' spouses in partnership with medicine, working as volunteers advocating for medicine and medical families.

The Travis County Medical Alliance, founded in 1924, has a history supporting the citizens of Travis County. General membership meetings with guest speakers, philanthropic opportunities, backing organized medicine, and many social engagements are offered to our members: the spouses of Travis County physicians and some physicians, as well. Your membership is welcome!

Volunteer Work...

Our members have opportunities to support several service projects with their time and financial resources.

Be Wise--Immunize: Alliance members coordinated two immunization events in Travis County, participated in the Immunization City Collaboration, provided Welcome Baby immunization cards to new parents in area hospitals, and developed a video/PowerPoint immunization presentation for use with the Baby Think It Over program.

Ronald McDonald House: Alliance members provide hot lunches weekly for families with critically ill children.

Hard Hats for Little Heads: The Alliance distributed bicycle helmets to children at the Livestrong Kids Adventure Race as part of the Armstrong Foundation Ride For the Roses Weekend.

Project Graduation: Funds are provided to area high schools to support drug-and alcohol-free graduation parties.

Nursing Scholarships: Endowments provide nursing scholarships each year to one ACC student and one UT student.

Science Fair: Monetary donations support the area-wide science fair.

Baby Think It Over: Life-like dolls were donated to 14 area middle schools to prevent teenage pregnancy and teach related topics, including the importance of immunizations and the consequences of shaken baby syndrome.

Grants: In keeping with their focus of working for a healthier central Texas, the Travis County Medical Alliance Executive Board on Tuesday, April 18th, awarded $45,000 in community service grants to numerous Travis County healthcare-related organizations. This money was raised with donations received from physicians and their spouses through the annual fund drive and with profits received from their sold-out charity Gala. Recipients of this year's grants are Any Baby Can ($2500), The Arc ($5000), Swim Safe ($1000), Capital of Texas Reach Out and Read ($2075), Family Eldercare ($900), Hospice Austin ($1000), Sammy's House ($6000), Shoes for Austin ($2000), Camp Sweeney ($1000), Children's Wellness Center ($1975), Vin Care/St. Louise House ($1000), Volunteer Healthcare ($10,000), Women's Advocacy Project ($5880), Wonders & Worries ($1615), and LifeWorks ($4000).

Advocating for medicine...

With unmatched access to Texas' elected officials and our own TMA lobbyists, the Travis County Medical Alliance believes that its proactive work enhances our opportunity to influence public health policy, thereby supporting our physician spouses. Voting in all elections and membership in TEXPAC is encouraged, especially during this dynamic time in health care. Because of the overwhelming success of First Tuesdays at the Capitol, we will again join the TMA on the first Tuesday of each month at the Capitol to discuss with our elected officials issues that matter to medicine. For more information about the legislative and public policy agenda of the TMA, please visit www.texmed.org.

and medical families...

We're serious about supporting our own medical family. Quality of Life committees bring members together in small groups based on common interests. When members face crisis, the Outreach and Support Committee prepare meals and sends notes of concern. And finally, we organize social events such as Toast to Doctors, Holiday Brunch, Spring Brunch, and Gala to help members and their families form friendships outside of work.

Quality of Life Committees

Book Review, Wine & Dine, Mahjongg, Primetime Ladies, For Parents Sake, Partners in Practice, Lunch Bunch, Women in Medicine, and Triathlon Training. New committees form when interest develops.
