One of the underlying causes of physician burnout increasingly recognized and researched is our lack of self-compassion—withholding from ourselves the compassion and
encouragement that we work so hard to give to our patients. Dr. Kristen Neff, a member of the
U.T. Austin psychology faculty is one of the leading experts in this emerging field. Some
of her work and suggested resources are found on her website. As
Dr. Neff notes, "Instead of mercilessly judging and criticizing yourself for various inadequacies or
shortcomings, self-compassion means you are kind and understanding when
confronted with personal failings – after all, who ever said you were supposed
to be perfect?”
