Remembering the Heart of Medicine

From Dr. Rachel Remen’s Institute for the Study of Health and Illness.  This Website has a rich offering of articles about all facets of physician wellness and self-care, as well as discussion groups, book reviews and an assortment of videos. This website does require you to register to have access to full website resources, but it is well worth the effort.

Self Compassion

One of the underlying causes of physician burnout increasingly recognized and researched is our lack of self-compassion—withholding from ourselves the compassion and encouragement that we work so hard to give to our patients. Dr. Kristen Neff, a member of the U.T. Austin psychology faculty is one of the leading experts in this emerging field. Some of her work and suggested resources are found on her website.  As Dr. Neff notes, "Instead of mercilessly judging and criticizing yourself for various inadequacies or shortcomings, self-compassion means you are kind and understanding when confronted with personal failings – after all, who ever said you were supposed to be perfect?”

 

American Academy of Emergency Physicians

A variety of physician wellness resources from the American Academy of Emergency Physicians.  Notable among the many resources available here is “Information and Resources Regarding Litigation Stress.”

 

Behavioral Health & Wellness Program: A Work & Well-being Toolkit for Physicians 

This toolkit developed by the School of Medicine, University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus includes several-dozen pages of interactive curriculum: physician health and well-being; a model for whole health; self-assessment; mindfulness and building and sustaining a change plan.
